In-Depth Information
Església de Santa Maria del Mar
Barcelona's most stirring
Gothic structure

)
looms majestically above the
compact cobblestone lanes of El Born. Inside, a real sense of light and space pervades the
entire sanctuary of the church. Opposite the church's southern flank at El Fossar de les
Moreres, an eternal flame commemorates the Catalan resistance fighters, buried here after
the siege of Barcelona ended in defeat in September 1714 during the War of the Spanish
Succession.
Passeig del Born
One of Barcelona's prettiest
pedestrian lanes
has a graceful setting amid outdoor cafes
and bars. Still a favourite with promenading residents, the Passeig del Born was Bar-
celona's main square from the 13th to 18th centuries. Jousting tournaments, executions
and other public entertainments took place here in the Middle Ages.
