In-Depth Information
MACBA
Stroll past Plaça de Vincenç Martorell , a pleasant slice of local life, and make your way
over to the MACBA ( Click here ) , which was a major catalyst to the cultural rebirth of El
Raval. The ultra-modern all-white design by American architect Richard Meier was con-
troversial for its dramatic contrast to the surrounding historic buildings.
Bar Muy Buenas
For a refreshment, stop in Bar Muy Buenas ( Click here ) on Carrer del Carme. Opened
as a milk bar in the late 19th century, it retains much of its original Modernista decor. It's
a welcoming spot for a tipple and snacks.
Antic Hospital de la Santa Creu
Up the road, have a wander through the peaceful courtyard of the Antic Hospital de la
Santa Creu ( Click here ) , the city's main hospital in the 15th century. The impressive
Gothic buildings now house cultural institutions, including a large library.
La Boqueria
Just east is the Mercat de la Boqueria ( Click here ), the massive food market that brings
gourmands to their knees. Fruits, cheeses, bakery items, wines, antipasti and other goodies
make for a first-rate picnic. Or head to the tapas bars in the back.
Hotel España
After a few nibbles at La Boqueria, stroll over to Hotel España for classic Catalan fare.
The famous dining rooms are part of the 1903 design by Domènech i Montaner and there
is a magnificent alabaster fireplace designed by Eusebi Arnau.
Palau Güell
Make your way down Carrer de les Penedides to one of El Raval's star attractions, the re-
cently restored Palau Güell ( Click here ) , one of Gaudí's first major commissions. The
classic Gaudí elements are at play, including colourful mosaic-covered chimney pots.
