Civil War & La Rambla
La Rambla saw action during the Civil War. Orwell vividly described the avenue
gripped by revolutionary fervour in the early days of the war: 'Down the Ramblas,
the wide central artery of the town where crowds of people streamed constantly to
and fro, the loud-speakers were bellowing revolutionary songs all day and far into
the night…There was much in it that I did not understand, in some ways I did not
even like it, but I recognised it immediately as a state of affairs worth fighting for.'
Later in the war, heavy street fighting took place on La Rambla. Anarchists even
shot at Orwell while he was dashing across La Rambla.
