and it's believed this road connected Ro-
man Barcino with the Via Augusta, which

Els Quatre Gats
Next, head over to one of the few Modernista buildings in the Gothic quarter. 'The Four
Cats' restaurant, started life as Casa Martí. From 1897 to 1903, it was the hang-out for
bohemians and artists, including Picasso.
La Catedral
Head down Avinguda del Portal de l'Angel to the magnificent cathedral ( Click here ) .
Before entering, look at the three Picasso friezes on the building facing the square.
Plaça de Sant Felip Neri
Enter the former gates of the ancient fortified city and turn right into Plaça de Sant Felip
Neri . Note the shrapnel-scarred walls of the old church , damaged by pro-Francist
bombers in 1939.
Santa Eulàlia
Head out of the square and turn right. On this narrow lane, you'll spot a small statue of
Santa Eulàlia ( Click here ) , one of Barcelona's patron saints. Martyred by the Romans,
she allegedly suffered numerous tortures.
Església de Santa Maria del Pi
Make your way west to the 14th-century Església de Santa Maria del Pi ( Click here ) ,
which is famed for its magnificent rose window. Adjacent to the church are two serene
plazas with outdoor cafes.
