Abnormal Seedlings - Large-seeded epigeal legumes (see Fig. 6.8 on the previous page)
1. For Phaseolus vulgaris , less than 1/2 of cotyledonary tissue remains attached, or free from necro-
sis or decay. For other species, the cotyledons are not assessed. Abnormal if both cotyledons are
missing and the seedling is weak.
2. Epicotyl missing, malformed or with deep open cracks. Less than one primary leaf present or
primary leaves too small compared to the rest of the seedlings. Terminal bud missing or damaged.
3. Hypocotyl with deep open cracks, or watery, short, curled or thickened.
4. Primary root missing, weak or stubby, with weak secondary roots.
5. One or more essential seedling structures impaired by infection or decay.
