In-Depth Information
Bahía Drake is rife with marine life, including more than 25 species of dolphin and whale
that pass through on their migrations throughout the year. This area is uniquely suited for
whale-watching: humpback whales come from both the northern and the southern hemi-
spheres to calve, resulting in the longest humpback whale season in the world. Humpbacks
can be spotted in Bahía Drake year-round (except May), but the best months to see whales
are late July through early November.
Several of the lodges are involved with programs that protect and preserve marine life in
Bahía Drake, as well as programs that offer tourists a chance for a close encounter. Tours
generally cost about US$100 per person. Note that since 2006 it has been illegal to swim
with dolphins.
