Fiesta de los Negritos RELIGIOUS
Lesser-known than the Fiesta de los Diablitos, this festival is held during the second week
of December to celebrate the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception. Traditional indigenous
music (mainly drumming and bamboo flutes) accompanies dancing and costumes.
Sleeping & Eating
Although the little dirt streets of Boruca village have almost no structured tourism other
than basic craft stalls, simple meals are available and travelers can find rooms to rent by
inquiring locally. Mileni Gonzalez ( 2730-5178; laflordeboruca@gmail.com ) . a local com-
munity organizer, can help arrange cabina accommodations or homestays, which are an
excellent way to connect with the community and contribute to the local economy.
Galería Namu ( 2256-3412; www.galerianamu.com ; Av 7 btwn Calles 5 & 7, San José) in San
José can arrange local tours of the Boruca area, which include homestays, hiking to water-
falls, handicraft demonstrations and storytelling. These cost US$65 per person per day, and
include meals, but not transportation to the village itself, which is relatively simple to

Shopping
The Brunka are celebrated craftspeople and their traditional art plays a leading role in the
survival of their culture. While most make their living from agriculture, some indigenous
people have begun producing fine handicrafts for tourists. The tribe is most famous for its
ornate masks, carved from balsa or cedar, and sometimes colored with natural dyes and ac-
rylics. Brunka women also use pre-Columbian backstrap looms to weave colorful, natural
cotton bags, placemats and other textiles. These crafts are not widely available elsewhere
in the country.
