In-Depth Information
Most travelers arrange tours either through the hotels listed here or with an operator in
Montezuma or Jacó. However, this is one region where independence (and language skills)
can make for a good adventure - inquire locally to find out if someone with a boat is will-
ing to take you where you want to go for a fair price. Turismo Curú , in Paquera, offers a
variety of low-key itineraries to the islands.
Bay Island Cruises BOAT TOUR
( 2258-3536; www.bayislandcruises.com ; US$115)
Board the catamaran The Great Bay Princess for a day trip to pristine Isla Tortuga or his-
toric Isla San Lucas. The trip includes transportation from San José, a bilingual guide,
meals and drinks, as well as entertainment on board.
Calypso Tours BOAT TOUR
( 2256-2727; www.calypsocruises.com ; tours from US$139)
Calypso Tours takes passengers to Isla Tortuga in a luxurious 21m motorized catamaran.
It's all very flash, with a couple of outdoor Jacuzzis, an underwater viewing window and a
kayaking option. It's not a bad deal considering that the price includes transportation from
San José, Jacó, Manuel Antonio or Monteverde, as well as food and drinks.
Getting There & Away
There is no public transportation in the area. The dirt road from Playa Naranjo to Paquera
requires a 4WD for most of the year.
Paquera
The tiny village of Paquera is about 12km by road from Playa Naranjo and 4km from the
ferry terminal. Paquera is more of a population center than Playa Naranjo, though there's
little reason to stay here longer than you have to.
