In-Depth Information
Roberto's COSTA RICAN
( 2672-0011; mains US$9-18; 8am-9pm; )
If you want to sip fruity cocktails while you watch the sun drop into the sea, Roberto's is
the place for you. For dinner, there is plenty of local seafood and other Tico specialties. Or
snack on burgers and sandwiches when you come in from the beach for lunch. It's not the
most complicated food you'll ever eat, but it doesn't need to be.
Getting There & Away
BUS
Buses to Liberia and San José depart from the main road on the northern end of the beach
and make a stop in Sardinal.
Liberia (La Pampa) US$1; 1¼ hours; departs eight times from 4:50am to 5:30pm.
San José (Tralapa) US$9; six hours; departs 5am and 3:30pm.
CAR
If you're driving from Liberia, take the signed turnoff to Playa del Coco. The entire road is
paved.
North of Hermosa, the main coastal road leads to the beaches along the Gulf of
Papagayo. Playa Panama is right in the middle of the gulf, with mangroves on one side and
a placid bay that feels almost like a lake. In between are the rustic Playa Bonita and Playa
Buena, which you can access with your own wheels and a bit of ingenuity.
TAXI
A taxi from Liberia costs about US$40 and a taxi from Coco about US$15.
Playa Ocotal
There isn't an actual town here - just a few vacation rentals and an attractive resort. That's
one reason it feels like a rustic outpost amid the condo-mania of the northern peninsula.
The beach is gray and wooded, and the northernmost corner is quite picturesque. The wa-
ter is warm and placid. It's about 4km southwest of Playa del Coco by paved road, so it's
worth a trip simply to eat at Father Rooster's.
