mosaic-tile patios decorated with hand-painted Sarchí-style wooden chairs and plenty of
potted plants. It's a cheerful cheapie, for sure. There's an attached

For more sophisticated eats and environs come to this 2nd-story, polished-wood wagon
wheel of a bar and grill. In addition to three flat-screen TVs and all the ball games, it of-
fers grilled
chuleta
(pork chop) plates, chicken brochettes, beef fajitas and whole-fried-fish
dinners.
Getting There & Away
From Upala, the well-maintained, paved Hwy 6 runs south via Bijagua, intersecting with
the Interamericana just north of Cañas. Also paved, Hwy 4 runs in a more southeasterly
direction to Muelle de San Carlos (near La Fortuna). A rough, unpaved road, usually pass-
able to all cars, skirts the Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Caño Negro on the way to
Los Chiles, the official border crossing with Nicaragua.
The bus terminal is right off the park; a
ticket booth
( 4:30-5:15am, 7:30am-1pm &
6:45-8pm Mon-Sat)
has information and can store bags. Taxis congregate just outside the bus
terminal. The following buses depart from Upala:
Cañas, via Bijagua
US$2, two hours, 5am, 6am, 8:30am, 11am, 1pm and 3:30pm.
Liberia
US$2, two hours, 7:30am.
Los Chiles, via Caño Negro
US$2, two hours, 4am, noon and 4:30pm.
San José, via Cañas
US$4, five hours, 4:30am, 5:15am and 9:30am.
