In-Depth Information
Conspicuous reptiles include the spectacled caiman, green iguana and striped basilisk.
Howler monkeys, white-faced capuchins and two-toed sloths are common, and despite in-
creasing incursions from poachers, pumas, jaguars and tapirs have been recorded here in
surprising numbers.
Caño Negro is also home to an abundance of river turtles, which were historically an
important part of the Maleku diet. Prior to a hunt, the Maleku would appease the turtle
god, Javara, by fasting and abstaining from sex. If the hunt was successful, the Maleku
would later celebrate by feasting on smoked turtle meat and consuming large quantities of
chicha (a spirit derived from maize). And, well, they probably had some sex too.
Mosquitoes in Caño Negro are damn near prehistoric. Bring bug spray or suffer the con-
sequences.
Tours
Hiring a local guide is quick, easy and full of advantages - you'll pay less, you'll be sup-
porting the local economy, and you'll have more privacy when you're out on the water.
The local guide cooperative, Real Tour ( 2471-1621; real.tour@hotmail.com ; US$40-60, plus
park admission; 8am-4pm) , is well signed and set right in the center of town. For a bit
more cash you can add in a one-hour turtle and butterfly tour.
If you're looking to do some sportfishing, it's best to organize your trips through one of
the lodges in the park. Seasonal fishing licenses, valid for two months, can be arranged
through the lodges or at the ranger station for US$34. You'll need a photocopy of your
passport and a small photo.
