Orientation
The last stretch of paved road along Hwy 35 is home to a few restaurants, the post office
and a gas station. If you continue north past Los Chiles on the rutted dirt road, you'll find
yourself in the dusty no-man's-land en route to a border crossing you won't be allowed to
use.
Drivers: hang a left (west) off the highway when you see the sign for Palí grocery store.
The bus terminal is tucked behind Soda Pamela on Av 1. The docks are located about 1km
west of the bus terminal. Before hopping on the boat to Nicaragua, you need to stop at mi-
gración, across the street from Hotel Tulipán.
Getting There & Away
Drivers usually get here via Hwy 35 from Muelle. Skid marks and reptilian road kill do
break up the beautiful monotony of orange groves, sage-blue pineapple fields and dense
sugarcane plantations. More scenic, if a little harder on your chassis, is the decent dirt road
running for 50km from Upala, through Caño Negro, passable for normal cars throughout
the dry season.
