Little Longhorn TEX-MEX
( 2695-2035; mains US$8-12; noon-8pm Tue-Sun)
Jason from Texas knows how to make a good burger, and he'll make one for you, just the
way you like it. Veggie burger, if you prefer. There's country music on the radio and foot-
ball on the TV. Yeehaw! Little Longhorn is in the village of San Luis, about 1km from the
turnoff.
Tilarán
Pop 8900
Near the southwestern end of Laguna de Arenal, the small town of Tilarán has a laid-back,
middle-class charm - thanks to its long-running status as a regional ranching center. This
tradition is honored on the last weekend in April with a rodeo that's popular with Tico vis-
itors, and on June 13 with a fiesta de toros (bullfight) that's dedicated to patron San Anto-
nio.
Because it's situated on the slopes of the Cordillera de Tilarán, this little hub is a much
cooler alternative (in climate and atmosphere) than, say, Cañas, and makes a pleasant stop
between La Fortuna and Monteverde. Life unfurls immediately around the main plaza.
Wander more than a block in any direction, and things get rather residential. Street signs
are a new and limited resource.
The city has several ATMs, two gas stations and an internet cafe.
Sleeping & Eating
Cheap meals can be found in the mercado (market) beside the bus terminal, or pop into the
SuperCompro (
8am-8pm) for groceries; it's across from the park.
