Set high on the Arenal slopes, this sensational, sprawling lodge is the only accommodation
in the national park. Rooms range from La Casona's rustic doubles with shared bathrooms
and views from the porch, to junior suites, with king-size beds, local art and huge picture
windows framing the volcano. Most of the rooms fall somewhere in the middle of this
range.
There's a decent international restaurant on the grounds (as there's obviously nowhere
else to eat in the area). There is also a small museum with exhibits on the history, volcano-
logy and hydrology of Arenal. Rates include access to the swimming pool and hiking
trails, as well as a free guided walk each morning.
Information
the western side of the volcano, and the complex housing it also includes an information
center and parking lot. From here, trails lead 3.4km toward the volcano.
Getting There & Away
To get to the ranger station by car, head west from La Fortuna for 15km, then turn left at
the 'Parque Nacional' sign and take the 2km good dirt road to the entrance on the left side
of the road. You can also take an 8am bus toward Tilarán (tell the driver to drop you off at
the park) and catch the 2pm bus back to La Fortuna.
If you are heading to Arenal Observatory Lodge, continue driving on the dirt road.
About 3km past the ranger station you will come to a small one-lane bridge and parking
area. After crossing the bridge you'll reach a fork in the road; left goes to Arenal Observat-
ory Lodge and right goes to the village of El Castillo. Turn left and continue 2.6km to
reach the lodge. This steep, hard-packed gravel and partially paved road is fine for most
vehicles, but a 4WD is recommended.
A taxi from La Fortuna to either the lodge or El Castillo will cost about US$30.
El Castillo
