(
2666-8075; www.guachipelin.com ; s/d/tr/q incl breakfast US$81/99/128/148;
)
This appealing 19th-century working cattle ranch is set on 12 sq km of primary and sec-
ondary forest. The 54 rooms are simple and spacious with traditional wood furniture and
wide, welcoming verandas. All rooms enjoy lovely views of the volcano and surrounding
grounds. You'll appreciate the welcome drink that awaits you when you check in.
Be warned that the onsite 'adventure center' makes this place feel a little like a vacation
factory, catering largely to package-tour clientele who descend for organized horse tours,
in-house canopy tours and guided hikes in the national park.
Rincón de la Vieja Lodge LODGE
( 2200-0238; www.hotelricondelaviejacr.com ; s/d incl breakfast from US$60/70; )
Closest to the Las Pailas entrance, this rustic hacienda is on 400 hectares of protected land
in breezy horse country. In addition to the 49 rustic rooms, there are a small pond, a
family-style restaurant and a canopy tour. The staff are utterly charming.
Cañas Dulces Area
North of the road to Las Pailas is another, nearly roadless flank of the park, accessible
from the charming pueblo Cañas Dulces. This is where dramatic shark-fin mountains
draped in forest jut from pasturelands, and spectacular waterfalls thunder into valleys and
bowls steaming with hot springs and scalding volcanic mud.
Buena Vista Lodge LODGE
( 2690-1414; www.buenavistalodgecr.com ; d incl breakfast US$88-99; )
Part cattle ranch and part adventure lodge, this expansive place is set on 2000 acres. On
the grounds are three waterfalls, thermal pools, a canopy tour, hanging bridges and a thrill-
ing 400m mountain water slide. Choose between rustic stained-wood rooms and more
private log cabins with glorious views. This lodge caters to package tourists big time.
