lot of personality for a budget hotel. Rooms are decidedly basic with mostly shared bath-
rooms, but the price is right. The bilingual Tico owner, Denis, is a wealth of information.

This historic house has been artfully converted into an exquisite guesthouse, easily recog-
nizable by its newsprint facade. The rooms are simply and tastefully decorated with
wooden floors, soaring ceilings and antique furniture. The common lounge is hung with
original art and vintage furnishings, while gorgeous gardens, swimming pool with Jacuzzi
and hammocks are at your disposal.
All of the art (including the exterior) is the work of national artist and owner Karen
Clachar.

Clara and Isabella are your hostesses with the mostestes . These charming ladies go out of
their way to make sure their guests are happy, not least preparing an enormous, delicious
breakfast to send you off feeling satisfied. The rooms are not going to win any style
awards, but they are comfortable, with firm beds, incongruously formal furnishings and
spotless new bathrooms.
The location, about 2km northeast of Parque Central, is not convenient.
Hotel Boyeros HOTEL
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; 2666-0722; www.hotelboyeros.com ; cnr Interamericana & Av 2; s/d incl
breakfast US$60/70; )
The largest hotel in Liberia feels like a cross between a dude ranch and the Holiday Inn.
Once-proud rooms, arced around the pool on two floors, all have comfortable furnishings,
tile floors and cable TV, but they are aging quite conspicuously. There's also a 24-hour res-
taurant, pool with waterslide, kiddie pool and a shaded sitting area.
Look for the sculpture of the boyero (oxcart driver) out front.
