Hotel La Pacífica HOTEL
( 2669-6050; www.pacificacr.com ; d/apt US$76/114; )
A nature reserve with a working hacienda and an elegant restaurant, this property is 4.5km
north of Cañas on the Interamericana. Set on 9 hectares of dry tropical forest, the grounds
are superb for birds and wildlife. Wooden furniture and hand-painted tilework adorn the
spacious suites, which are decked with hammock-strung terraces.
The restaurant is also recommended, with many of the ingredients grown right here on
experimental organic plots. The result is tipica meals (mains US$8 to US$24), prepared
and presented with taste and grace.
Rincón Corobicí COSTA RICAN

A great lunch stop, this attractive Swiss-run restaurant is 4km north of Cañas on the banks
of the Río Corobicí. A terrace provides river and garden views, and a short trail follows
the riverbank, where you can take a cool dip.
WORTH A TRIP
BAR-B-Q TRES HERMANAS
Long before you get here, you'll notice signs on the Interamericana advertising the best
steakhouse in Guanacaste - Bar-B-Q Tres Hermanas ( 2232-6850;
www.bbqtreshermanas.com ; cnr Interamericana & Rte 18; mains US$7-18; 7am-9pm; ).
Believe the hype. This local landmark's specialty is barbecue beef and pork ribs, marin-
ated and slow cooked for eight hours. It's located about 20km south of Cañas. Look for
the giant bull.
This is a perfect pit stop if you're making the long drive to or from the Península de
Nicoya. Kids will love the playground and everyone else will appreciate the spotless, al-
most swanky restrooms.
