WORTH A TRIP
SAN LUIS ECOLODGE & RESEARCH STATION
Formerly a tropical biology research station, this drop-dead-gorgeous facility is Mon-
teverde's best-kept secret. Administered by the University of Georgia, it integrates acade-
mia with high-quality ecotourism and education. The 62-hectare campus is set on a cine-
matic jade plateau with cloud-forested mountains jack-knifing on three sides and keyhole
sea views to the west. Adjoining the southern reach of the Monteverde reserve, much of
the campus overlooks the boiling waters of the RÍo San Luis. Its average elevation of
1100m makes it a tad lower and warmer than Monteverde, and bird-watchers have recor-
ded some 230 species attracted by the slightly nicer weather. There's a working farm
with tropical-fruit orchards and a coffee harvest from November to March, and a number
of trails into primary and secondary forest.
Comfortable accommodations at the lodge ( 2643-7363; www.ecolodgesanluis.com ; dm/
s/d incl meals US$49/102/192; ) are available for anyone interested in learning
about the cloud-forest environment and experiencing a bit of rural Costa Rican life.
Rooms are built into a long house with soaring beamed ceilings and a common balcony
overlooking a forest teeming with monkeys and migratory birds. Rates include meals,
guided hikes, and a variety of slideshows and seminars about natural history. Discounts
can be arranged for students, researchers, large groups and long stays.
The ecolodge also runs a resident naturalist volunteer program, though there is a pref-
erence for University of Georgia students and graduates, and a six-month commitment is
required. The position entails leading a number of workshops and guided walks, as well as
participating in development projects on the station and in the community. Training,
room and board are provided. Yes, this is a special place to spend a few days/weeks/
months/years.
From the main road between Santa Elena and Monteverde, it's a steep 3km walk from
the signed road where the bus will drop you off. A 4WD taxi from Santa Elena costs about
US$15 each way, and the lodge can also arrange transportation from San José in ad-
vance.
Eating
Santa Elena has most of the budget kitchens in the area, but there's good eating throughout
the Monteverde swirl.
