This tower, constructed in 1876 by order of Heredia's provincial governor, is the official
symbol of Heredia. It was declared a national historic monument in 1974, but because of
its fragile state, it remains closed to the public.
Casa de la Cultura MUSEUM

Occupying a privileged position on the corner of the plaza just above the church, this low-
lying Spanish structure dates back to the late 18th century. It served at one point as the res-
idence of President Alfredo González Flores, who governed from 1913 to 1917. It is beau-
tifully maintained and now houses permanent historical displays as well as rotating art ex-
hibits.

At this excellent, wheelchair-accessible botanical garden, run by the non-profit National
Biodiversity Institute (INBio), visitors can admire native plants and animals in miniature
versions of the country's various life zones. Other attractions include farm animals, a but-
terfly garden, a serpentarium and a model sustainable home. Children's theater and multi-
media shows run throughout the day. It's 4km south of Heredia; see the website for direc-

A bit of a walk from the action, but worth it for its friendly, homey feel, this spotless
family-run place has 29 basic, brightly painted rooms with hot-water shower and TV. The
attached soda (cheap lunch counter) serves breakfast and lunch.
