In-Depth Information
The village of Grecia - once named the 'Cleanest Little Town in Latin America' - is
centered on pleasant Parque Central (Central Plaza) that is anchored by one of the most
charming churches in Costa Rica.
Sights
Catedral de la Mercedes CHURCH
At the heart of town you'll find the incredibly quaint Catedral de la Mercedes, a red metal
structure that was prefabricated in Belgium and shipped to Costa Rica in 1897 - and re-
sembles a gingerbread church. It has an airy nave, bright Spanish-tile floors and a Gothic-
style altar covered in marble.
World of Snakes ZOO
( 2494-3700; www.theworldofsnakes.com ; adult/child US$11/6; 8am-4pm)
Grecia's premier attraction lies 1.5km south of the bus station, along the old road to
Alajuela. It is a well-run breeding center focused on supporting endangered snake popula-
tions. More than 150 snakes (representing more than 50 species) are displayed in large
cages labeled in English and Spanish.
Rock Bridge BRIDGE
About 5km south of Grecia, a bend in the road leads to an 18th-century rock bridge, which
connects the hamlets of Puente de Piedra and Rincón de Salas. Locals say that the only
other rock bridge like this is in China, and some tales have it that it was built by the devil.
In 1994 it was declared a National Site of Historic Interest. With all that hype, don't be sur-
prised that it's small. Ask for directions, as it's hard to find.
Las Cataratas de Los Chorros WATERFALL
( GOOGLE MAP ; admission US$5; 8am-5pm Tue-Sun)
About 7km southeast of Grecia, toward Flores and Tacares, are two gorgeous waterfalls
and a swimming hole surrounded by picnic tables. It's a popular spot for weekending
couples. Get detailed directions before setting out.
