Landscapes & Ecology
Despite its diminutive size - at 51,000 sq km it is slightly smaller than the
USA's West Virginia - Costa Rica's land is an explosion of Technicolor con-
trasts and violent contradictions. On one coast are the breezy skies and big
waves of the Pacific. Only 119km away lie the muggy and languid shores of
the Caribbean. In between there are several active volcanoes, alpine peaks
and crisp high-elevation forest. Few places on earth can compare with this
little country's spectacular interaction of natural, geological and climatic
forces.
