towards the sliding friction strength. It is suggested that the EPRI (1992) data be used
along with Figures 16.15 to 16.18 to estimate the strength. Where it is critical, or there
are weak lift joints, laboratory tests should be carried out.

STRENGTH OF THE CONCRETE-ROCK CONTACT
EPRI (1992) report on direct shear tested one on the concrete-rock contact. They indicate
that peak friction angles are large, typically 54° to 68° at low stresses.
Khabbaz and Fell (1999) plotted the available data which is shown in Figures 16.19
and 16.20 .
