downstream section has been successfully used. Analysis is required of the potential for
differential settlement between the two zones. When the rockfill contains fines drainage
layers may be required.
Zones 2D and 2E are commonly placed in 0.2 m to 0.5 m layers with Zones 3A and 3B
from 0.8 m to 2.0 m thick (Materon and Mori, 2000). Zone 2D is commonly compacted
using manual vibratory compactors. In some projects 3-4% of cement is added to give
