Fun Facts L.A.-Style XXX-ercise
Actress Sheila Kelley has taken the L.A. exercise craze in an X-citing new direction
with “the S Factor,” a workout regimen inspired by striptease and pole dancing. A

“the Singing Cowboy” Autry's film and TV projects. The Hall of Merchandising displays
Roy Rogers bedspreads, Hopalong Cassidy radios, and other items fr om the collectiv e
consciousness—and material collections—of baby boomers. Provocative visiting exhibits
usually focus on cultural or domestic r egional histor y. D ocent-led tours ar e generally
scheduled on Saturdays at 11am and noon.

Petersen Automotive Museum Kids When the P etersen opened in 1994,
many locals were surprised that it had taken this long for the city of freeways to salute its
most important shaper. Indeed, this museum says more about the city than probably any
other in L.A. N amed for R obert Petersen, the publisher r esponsible for Hot R od and
Motor Trend magazines, the four-story, 300,000-square-foot museum displays more than
200 cars and motor cycles, from the historic to the futuristic. Cars on the first floor ar e
exhibited chr onologically in period settings. O ther floors ar e dev oted to fr equently
changing sho ws of race cars, early motor cycles, famous mo vie v ehicles, and celebrity
wheels such as J ack Benny's old Chr ysler Imperial. On the thir d floor is the D iscovery
Center, a “hands-on ” learning center that teaches adults and kids the basic scientific
principles of ho w a car wor ks. P ast sho ws hav e included a compr ehensive exhibit of
“woodies” and surf culture, Hollywood “star cars,” and the world's fastest and most valu-
able cars.

California African American Museum This small museum is both a celebration
of individual African Americans and a living sho wplace of contemporar y culture. The
best exhibits ar e temporar y and touch on themes as v aried as the human experience.
Previous shows have included a sculptur e exhibit examining interpr etations of home, a
survey of African puppetr y, and a look at B lack music in Los Angeles in the 1960s. I n
the gift shop you'll find sub-Saharan wooden masks and woven baskets, as well as hand-
embroidered Ethiopian pillows. There are also posters, childr en's books, and calendars.
