Elan Hotel Finds The Elan is truly a find: It's not only one of L.A. 's best bou-
tique-style hotels, it's one of the city 's best values as well. Rebuilt and freshly renovated
from the bones of a 1969 r etirement home, the modern str ucture blends elements from
the original facade with a modern, sophisticated decor . Inside, a mod, loungey lobb y
leads to handsomely appointed guest r ooms done in ser ene ear th tones. The design
merges form and function beautifully, resulting in amenity-laden and surprisingly luxuri-
ous accommodations, considering the price. The standard rooms aren't huge, but high
ceilings and thoughtfully designed custom furnishings cr eate the illusion of space, while
plush textured fabrics, beautifully made beds—with cushioned headboards, goose-down
comforters, and 350-thr ead-count E gyptian cotton linens—bathr ooms with cotton
robes, and the thickest, plushest bath sheets in to wn elevate comforts well beyond the
moderate price point. O n the do wnside, ther e's no vie w, no pool, no fitness center

(shoppers will love the walking-distance proximity to the Beverly Center).

Hotel Angeleno Los Angeles This L.A. landmark building is the last of a van-
ishing breed of circular hotels from the 1960s and 1970s. F ormerly a Holiday Inn, it was
revamped into a hip, modern destination. The location alone is a good reason to stay here:
It's perched beside the city's busiest freeway, a short hop from the popular Getty Center and
centrally located betw een the beaches, B everly Hills, and the S an Fernando Valley. Each
pie-shaped room comes with a private balcony and double-paned glass to keep most of the
freeway din at bay—think of it as complimentary white noise—while comfort comes in the
form of 300-count Italian linens, feather duvets, and pillow-top mattresses. Little extras like
30-inch plasma TVs, wireless Internet access, ergonomic work stations, and great views add
to the panache. Also a hot spot is the 17-story hotel's penthouse-level West supper club and
cocktail lounge, the city's first Italian steakhouse. Additional perks include an outdoor pool
with cabanas and a fir e pit, a lobb y-level cafe, and complimentar y pickup and dr op-off
service to the Getty Center, UCLA, and Westwood.
