working as a spy for the Inquisition. Forced to flee again, he spent his final years (1785-98)
as librarian for an aristocrat in Bohemia, his death coinciding with the death of the Venetian
Republic.

THE REPUBLIC DIES
In 1797 Napoleon's armies swept into Venice without a shot being fired. The emperor de-
creed the end of the Venetian Republic. Napoleon then lived briefly in Venice and pro-
nounced St. Mark's Square the finest drawing room in Europe. He traded Venice to Austria
