planes, and the most modern equipment) enforce the laws of the national Canadian govern-
ment, leaving responsibility for province laws to provincial and metropolitan police.
Even legends have their ironies. The Mounties achieved worldwide recognition largely
through movies made on location in Hollywood, not Canada. Over 400 motion pictures
have been “Mountie pictures.” Chief among them is an operetta, Rose Marie , written by a
Prague-born American composer, Rudolf Friml.
