New Zealand's population is about 4.4 million, 86 percent of whom live in urban
places. Human population is dwarfed by sheep flocks, as something on the order of 70 mil-
lion sheep graze the countryside.
WHEN WAS NEW ZEALAND DISCOVERED?
The country's remoteness had another consequence: it was the last place on earth to be
settled. Legend has it that the first visitor was Kupe, a Maori navigator who voyaged in a
twin-hulled sailing ship (a catamaran) made stable by parallel outriggers. Maori myth has
