THE VIEW COMING UPRIVER TO HO CHI MINH CITY
As ships churn up the Mekong, travelers see sights familiar to Joseph Conrad and Somerset
Maugham: cargo ships, sampans (with laundry strung on the deck), children scampering on
cargo, ferries, fishing boats, tugs—a busy river traffic. Houses and shacks on the riverbank,
and closer to the city, church spires and hotel rooftops in the distance. The spell of Conrad
is broken, or at least interrupted, by giant signs looming across the water: Toshiba, Sony,
