JAPAN INVADES CHINA
Manchuria, the ancestral home of the Manchu Dynasty, was Japan's springboard into Ch-
ina. Both Russia and Japan coveted Manchuria's minerals and its ports on the Pacific. Both
tried to dominate the province by building railroads, but Japan's ascendancy began after its
stunning defeat of Russia in the war of 1904-5 (the Russo-Japanese War). Taking advant-
age of turmoil in China, in 1932 Japan installed a puppet regime in Manchuria, calling it
the country of Manchukuo and, in a diplomatic sleight of hand, installing the last Manchu
emperor as its nominal ruler.
