in exhibitions in museums around the world, continues to invoke a sense of awe.
Tutankhamen's tomb is unique because it was virtually untouched by grave robbers.
Other tombs are celebrated for their frescos depicting the verdant fields in Osiris's domain,
the home life of the deceased, his or her worldly possessions, and other significant events
of his or her life on earth, not least of which were military victories. Often left untouched by
plunderers is mummified food, sustenance in the great beyond, as well as the mummified
bodies of animal pets—dogs, cats, and birds who will give pleasure and companionship in
the world beyond. Most poignant is the monkey, wrapped in linen and unguents, who sits
quietly awaiting for his master to summon him for the great journey.
