It was master-artificer Daedalus who built the labyrinth for King Minos. And when
Minos refused Daedalus's promised reward, Daedalus fashioned wings of wax to carry
him and his son, Icarus, to Sicily. But Icarus flew too close to the sun. The wax melted,
and Icarus fell into the sea and drowned, perhaps a victim of thoughtless daring, or as the
Greeks saw him, a youth afflicted by an unwise and unwelcome character flaw, hubris.
The second largest Aegean island is Rhodes, once home to one of the Seven Wonders
of the Ancient World, a lighthouse reputed to be one hundred feet high. Its very name,
Colossus, enters our language to signify great size. Rhodes is also the sometime home of
the Knights of Jerusalem, later of Cyprus, Rhodes, and Malta. Caesar studied oratory in
