events are sequenced by the learner's use of the buttons at the bottom of the interface that
are selectively enabled and disabled to regulate the learner's progress through this interface.
First, the learner is shown the Java symbol to enter, which is displayed in Figure 7 for the Java
keyword “extends.” The color of an item displayed for learning is blue, and that item stands
out from the remaining black items. Next are presented an explanation of the item (Figure 8)
and a multiple-choice test on the item's meaning (Figure 9). When the learner enters the item
correctly in a key-in box (Figure 10), the next item is displayed. Otherwise, the cycle repeats
until the item under consideration is learned, which is determined by correctly answering the
multiple-choice test followed by correctly typing the item into the key-in field by recall.
