The Stage 2 item familiarity and the Stage 3 item identification interfaces are presented
next, and these are interactive interfaces, as are all remaining interfaces in the tutoring system.
Figure 6 presents these two interfaces as they would appear for the following Java keyword:

Figure 6 (top view) displays the item familiarity interface , which is labeled Symbol
Familiarity in the title bar. This interface is intended to give new learners the opportunity to
rehearse the formal properties of the items prior to learning the meaning of the items. The
learner is required to type the displayed item in the key-in field, and this action is repeated
until the item is typed correctly. The purpose of this exercise is to help the learner develop
a minimal transcription repertoire (Skinner, 1957) to facilitate subsequent learning of the
