Self-Assessment Results
The results of Phase I, Part 2, the self-assessment survey, are shown in Tables 3 through
7. Of all of the software programs evaluated, students considered the Windows operating
system as that which they best knew. Only 1.6% of the students rated their Windows skills
as none (Not at all) or very little (Not very well). There was a noticeable drop between their
confidence with Windows and all other software applications used in the study. Excel was
the next software program that the students felt they had the most ability using. Only 39.6%
of the students indicated they had no (Not at all) or very little (Not very well) confidence using
Excel. Approximately half of the students (49.6%) rated their PowerPoint capabilities as “Not
at all” or “Not very well.” And, 51.7% of the students rated their computer concepts ability
as “Not at all” or “Not very well.” Access was the product they felt they knew least, with 63.2%
selecting the options “Not at all” or “Not very well” when asked to assess their relational
database capabilities.
