the program was outlined and scheduled as shown in Table 1, where the gray shaded boxes
show topics presented in the plenary room with all participants together, and the nonshaded
boxes show topics presented in groups.
Some special features should be outlined. To become acquainted with a PC desktop,
participants were shown the user interface, and it was explained. Because many experiences
show that beginners have special problems in handling a mouse as an input device, a separate
“mouse training” was held: with a special program from the WWW (www.gemeinsamlernen.de),
participants had to follow a light point with the cursor. They also had to click on certain boxes,
to paint something on the screen, etc.
All participants received an email address and account on the first day, using an Internet
Service Provider that gives access to email features immediately after signing in (web.de).
With their own email account, the participants could start sending and receiving emails on
the first day.
Handout/Booklet
To support the learning progress of the participants, a booklet was prepared that
summarized all necessary information and contained all tips and tricks (and Web addresses).
Additionally, the booklet gave some basic hints for buying a PC in order to surf the WWW
from home and how to get access to the WWW via phone, ISP, etc. The booklet consisted
