SystemGuard (2002) offers a number of remote support services for Oracle databases
in the areas of data integrity, resource usage, performance, configuration, and security.
Data Management with SQL Remote Database Access relies on the ISO/IEC RDA SQL
standard, which specifies a message format for remote communication of SQL database
language statements, query, and update, to a remote database. This specification defines
uses of the message fields and other implementation information, such as sequencing and
optional features. It shows how SQL statements map to the Remote Database Access (RDA)
protocol.
Recognizing that the performance of a database can only be as good as the performance
of the server, DBA Zone Inc., a pioneer in database management, initiated remote managed
Systems Administration (SA) services for its large and medium client organizations that need
ongoing database administration support (http://www.dbazone.com/).
Wireless Mobile DBA
Mobile DBA is a database administrator supporting multiple databases in remote
geographical locations of an organization's network. Using a wireless device, mobile DBA
can control Enterprise databases from anywhere in the world. Several database-monitoring
PDA-based tools are already available to support Mobil DBA functionality.
Various vendors provide technical solutions for wireless learning environments. For
example, Wireless Mobile Classroom from HP (http://government.hp.com/solutions_
detail.asp?agencyid=136&am=0&solutionid=38) addresses the wireless connectivity re-
quirements for a learning environment without walls, in particular, an environment of wireless
handheld devices.
Proactive Technologies, Inc. (2002) is a premier provider of database administration
products and services targeting wireless database administration technology. It developed
and offers Mobile-DBA software, an Oracle database administration utility loaded onto a
wireless handheld device. With Mobile-DBA loaded onto a PocketPC or Palm device,
database administrators can provide real-time remote database diagnosis, manage users,
sessions, database objects, performance, etc. The Mobile-DBA software package includes
server software and thin client. It supports security with VPN, SSL, DESX, and other
encryption protocols.
Main DBA functionality supported by Mobile-DBA includes the following:
Diskspace management — monitoring and managing table space size, adding data files
to a table space, managing rollback segments, and placing objects online and offline
Object management — monitoring database objects and changing storage parameters,
managing partitioned tables and indexes, granting and revoking object privileges, etc.
Session management — performing tasks such as monitoring user connections,
viewing session statistics and details, and killing a session
Security management — managing users, roles, privileges, and profiles
Performance management — monitoring system resource utilization
The Wireless DBA Kit from The Ultimate Software Consultants (TUSC) (2002) is a
turnkey wireless solution for delivering remote UNIX and database server administration
over a wireless Internet service provider. It includes two components: Hand-held TUSC Palm
