In-Depth Information
Ostiense
With its disused factories, authentic trattorias and university campus, Ostiense ( Click here
) is home to Rome's hottest clubs and hippest bars. But before the nightlife revs up, you
can explore several fascinating cultural gems.
Pigneto
Pigneto ( Click here ), a former working-class district southeast of Termini, is now one of
the capital's coolest neighbourhoods, a bar-heavy pocket frequented by bohemians, fun
seekers and trendsetting urbanites.
Testaccio
Formerly a working-class enclave, Testaccio ( Click here ) retains a genuine neighbour-
hood feel with its boisterous daily market, traditional Roman trattorias and popular main-
stream clubs.
Passeggiata on Via del Corso
The early evening passeggiata (evening stroll) is a quintessential Italian experience that's
particularly colourful at weekends when families, friends and lovers take to the streets to
parade up and down, to see and be seen. In times past, the passeggiata provided the per-
fect setting for young people to eye each other up and flirt, and still today there's plenty of
strutting on show.
To partake in this evening spectacle, head to Via del Corso around 6pm and join the
crowds for a leisurely stroll, perhaps stopping for an ice cream or to window shop in one
of the many flagship stores. Alternatively, grab a seat on the Spanish Steps and watch as
the theatrics unfold beneath you on Piazza di Spagna ( Click here ).
Catch Some Culture
Exhibitions
Romans are great exhibition-goers and while the city's big museums are mainly left to
out-of-towners, temporary exhibitions are eagerly supported by locals. Top locations in-
clude the Scuderie Papali al Quirinale ( Click here ), a beautiful gallery housed in the
former stables of the Palazzo del Quirinale, the Complesso del Vittoriano ( Click here ), in
the interior of Il Vittoriano, and the beautiful Renaissance Chiostro del Bramante
(Bramante Cloisters) ( Click here ).
