The Arts
Rome's turbulent history and magical cityscape have long provided inspiration for
painters, sculptors, film-makers, writers and musicians. The great classical works of
Roman antiquity fuelled the imagination of Renaissance artists; Counter-Reformation
persecution led to baroque art and popular street satire; the trauma of Mussolini and
WWII found expression in neo-realist cinema. More recently, the tough economic cli-
mate has led to spending cuts but the setbacks are borne and Rome's arts scene con-
tinues to thrive.
