This popular three-star hotel enjoys one of Rome's premier locations, bang
opposite the Pantheon. But while it's a friendly place and the rooms are comfortable, it's a
tight squeeze and late-night noise can be a problem.

Only 50m from the Spanish Steps, in an area where a bargain is a Bulgari watch
bought at the sales, the friendly, efficient Panda is an anomaly: a budget pension and a
splendid one. The clean rooms are smallish but nicely furnished, and there are several
triples with a bed on a cosy mezzanine. Air-con costs €6 per night. Book well ahead.

The excellent Piccola Maison is housed in a 19th-century building in a great
location close to Piazza Barberini, and has pleasingly plain, neutrally decorated rooms and
thoughtful staff. It's a great deal.

Twenty-room Okapi occupies a townhouse in a great location close to Piazza
del Popolo. Rooms are simple, small, airy affairs with cream walls, terracotta floors and
double glazing. Some are decorated with ancient-style carvings, and several have small
terraces. Bathrooms are tiny but sparkling clean.
