EATING & DRINKING
The Frascati area is famous for its white wine and there are plenty of places where you can
try local varieties. In Frascati itself, most fun are the town's famous rough-and-ready canti-
nas, which usually sell porchetta, olives, salami and cheese to go with jugs of the fresh
young white wine. You can also pick up a porchetta panini from one of the stands that do a
brisk weekend trade around the town's Piazza del Mercato.
HOSTERIA SAN ROCCO€
( 06 9428 2786; www.hosteriasanrocco.com ; Via Cadorna 1; meals around €25; lunch & dinner) To try a
typical fraschette (osteria that traditionally served only porchetta and wine) head to Fras-
cati's 'Da Trinca', as it's nicknamed by locals. It serves up traditional dishes such as spa-
ghetti alla gricia (with pecorino cheese and cured pork jowl) and saltimbocca (veal topped
with prosciutto), as well as a fine array of antipasti.
OSTERIA
CACCIANI€€€
( 06 942 03 78; Via Armando Diaz 13; meals €50; Tue-Sat) Frascati's smartest and most renowned
restaurant is Cacciani, with fine food and a graceful terrace. The menu offers some modern
creative dishes, but it's the regional staples such as spaghetti cacio e pepe (with pecorino
cheese and pepper) that really stand out. There's also a weighty wine list and a lovely ter-
race with twink- ling views of Rome.
RESTAURANT
ANTICO RISTORANTE PAGNANELLI€€€
( 06 936 00 04; www.pagnanelli.it ; Via Antonio Gramsci 4, Castel Gandolfo; meals €70) A few hundred yards
from the hotel of the same name and a short walk from the centre of Castel Gandolfo, this
greenery-laden restaurant is a great place for a romantic meal. It's no casual trattoria, erring
on the formal and touristy side, but the views over the deep blue chasm of Lago Albano
can't be beat.
