contemporary art gallery. Exhibits, which include works by all of Italy's important post-
WWII artists, are displayed in what was once a brewery. The sexy black-and-red interior
retains much of the building's original structure but sports a sophisticated steel-and-glass
finish thanks to a revamp by French architect Odile Decq.

something of a high-society burial ground, known as the Queen of Catacombs. Seven
popes and various martyrs were buried in the 13km of tunnels between 309 and 555. They
retain a lot of their original decoration, including the oldest-ever image of the Madonna, a
scratchy fresco dating to the early 3rd century.

QUARTIERE COPPEDÈ
Hidden among the elegant palazzi (mansions) that flank Viale Regina Margherita is the Quartiere Coppedè
MAP GOOGLE MAP ( Viale Regina Margherita) , a tiny pocket of fairy-tale buildings and monuments.
Tuscan turrets, Liberty sculptures, Moorish arches, Gothic gargoyles, frescoed facades and palm-fringed gardens
are all squeezed in to create a truly mesmerising pastiche of architectural styles and influences. The mind behind
the madness belonged to a little-known Florentine architect, Gino Coppedè, who designed and built the quarter
between 1913 and 1926.
Highlights include the Fontana delle Rane MAP GOOGLE MAP ( Fountain of the Frogs) in Piazza Mincio, a
modern take on the better known Fontana delle Tartarughe in the Jewish Ghetto.
The neighbourhood is best entered from the corner of Via Tagliamento and Via Dora.
