In-Depth Information
Cardinal Scipione Caffarelli Borghese (1576-1633) was one of the most influential figures in Rome's baroque art
world. Blessed with wealth, power and position - he was made a cardinal at age 26 by his uncle Pope Paul V - he
sponsored the greatest artists of the day, including contemporaries Caravaggio, Bernini, Domenichino, Guido
Reni and Pieter Paul Rubens. Yet while he promoted the artists he didn't always see eye to eye with them and he
was quite prepared to play dirty to get his hands on their works: he had the fashionable painter Cavaliere
d'Arpino flung into jail in order to confiscate his canvases and had Domenichino arrested to force him to sur-
render La Caccia di Diana (The Hunt of Diana).
For a coffee or bite to eat, exit the museum and head to the Cinecaffè ( Click here ), near Villa Borghese's
southern entrance.
