10 To walk through the tumbledown ruins of the Roman Forum is to retrace the foot-
steps of the great figures of Roman history, people such as Julius Caesar and Pompey,
who both led triumphal marches up Via Sacra, the Forum's central axis. The Forum is
today one of Rome's most visited sights, but crowds are nothing new here. In ancient
times this was the city's busy, chaotic centre, humming with activity as everyone from
senators to slaves went about their daily business.
