DRINKING & NIGHTLIFE
The Monti area, north of the Colosseum, is splendid for an aperitivo , meal or after-
dark drinks, and is dotted with charming bars, enoteche (wine bars), and even a jazz
club. If you want to keep it real, head down to San Lorenzo, the student district, a
centre for grungy pubs, bars, clubs and some surprisingly chic restaurants. Less stu-
denty but still with a gritty feel is the happening boho nightlife district of Pigneto.

( Via Panisperna 251; 12.30pm-1am Mon-Fri, 6pm-1am Sat & Sun; Cavour) The Three Steps is always
packed, with crowds spilling out into the street. Apart from a tasty choice of wines, it sells
the damn fine Menabrea beer, brewed in northern Italy. You can also tuck into a heart-
warming array of cheeses, salami and dishes such as polpette al sugo (meatballs with
sauce; €7).

Fafiuché means 'light-hearted fun' in the Piedmontese dialect, and this place lives up to its
name. The narrow, bottle-lined warm-orange space exudes charm: come here to enjoy wine
and artisanal beers, eat delicious dishes originating from Puglia to Piedmont, or buy delect-
able foodstuffs. Aperitivo is from 6.30pm to 9pm.
2 PERIODICO CAFFÈ

( Via Leonina 77; 9am-1am Tue-Thu, to 2am Fri-Sun; Cavour) This cafe has a funky laid-back vibe,
with its mismatched vintage furniture, fairylights in jam jars and personable bar staff. It's
the kind of place you might find in Shoreditch (London) or the Marais (Paris), but what's
uniquely Italian is the cuisine, coffee and delicious little extras such as lavender-scented
More Bianche biscuits.
