PIAZZA DI SPAGNA & THE SPANISH STEPS
The Piazza di Spagna and the Spanish Steps (Scalinata della Trinità dei Monti) are
the focal point of the Tridente district, and most visitors will settle down here to take
stock at some point. The area has been a magnet for foreigners since the 1800s. When
Dickens visited in the 19th century he reported that 'these steps are the great place of
resort for the artists' “models”… The first time I went up there, I could not conceive
why the faces seemed familiar to me… I soon found that we had made acquaintance,
and improved it, for several years, on the walls of various Exhibition Galleries.'
