If you've ever tried to install Hadoop from the Apache download, you'll know that Hadoop
is still a bear to install and manage. Recently, Pivotal and Hortonworks, two of the major
vendors, agreed to work jointly on Ambari in an attempt to produce a production-ready,
easy-to-use, web-based GUI tool based on a RESTful API.
The Ambari documentation at the official page says that it can:
▪ Provision and monitor a Hadoop cluster
▪ Provide a step-by-step wizard for installing Hadoop services across any number of hosts
▪ Provide central management for starting, stopping, and reconfiguring Hadoop services
across the entire cluster
▪ Provide a dashboard for monitoring health and status of the Hadoop cluster
