Chemical Properties of Asphalt
Asphalt is a mixture of a wide variety of hydrocarbons primarily consisting of
hydrogen and carbon atoms, with minor components such as sulfur, nitrogen,
and oxygen (heteroatoms), and trace metals. The percentages of the chemical
components, as well as the molecular structure of asphalt, vary depending on
the crude oil source (Peterson 1984).
