GETTING THERE & AWAY
Flights, tours and rail tickets can be booked online at lonelyplanet.com/bookings.
Air
There are direct flights to Scottish airports from England, Wales, Ireland, the USA, Canada,
Scandinavia and several countries in Western and central Europe. From elsewhere, you'll
probably have to fly into a European hub and catch a connecting flight to a Scottish airport
- London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Paris have the best connections. If flying from North
America, it's worth looking at Icelandair, which often has good deals to Glasgow via Reyk-
javik.
CLIMATE CHANGE & TRAVEL
Every form of transport that relies on carbon-based fuel generates CO2, the main cause of human-induced climate
change. Modern travel is dependent on aeroplanes, which might use less fuel per kilometre per person than most
cars but travel much greater distances. The altitude at which aircraft emit gases (including CO2) and particles also
contributes to their climate change impact. Many websites offer 'carbon calculators' that allow people to estimate
the carbon emissions generated by their journey and, for those who wish to do so, to offset the impact of the green-
house gases emitted with contributions to portfolios of climate-friendly initiatives throughout the world. Lonely
Planet offsets the carbon footprint of all staff and author travel.
Airports & Airlines
Scotland has four main international airports: Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Glasgow
Prestwick. A few short-haul international flights land at Inverness and Sumburgh, while
London is the main UK gateway for long-haul flights.
Aberdeen Airport (ABZ; www.aberdeenairport.com ) Aberdeen Airport is at Dyce, 6 miles
northwest of the city centre. There are regular flights to numerous Scottish and UK destina-
tions, including Orkney and Shetland, and international flights to some European countries.
Edinburgh Airport (EDI; www.edinburghairport.com ) Scotland's busiest airport, 5 miles
west of the city.
Glasgow International Airport (GLA; www.glasgowairport.com ) Ten miles west of the
city, Glasgow International Airport handles domestic traffic and international flights.
