Getting There & Away
Air
The oil industry ensures that air connections are good. The main airport ( Click here ) is at
Sumburgh, 25 miles south of Lerwick. Flybe ( 0871 700 2000; www.flybe.com ) runs
daily services to Aberdeen, Kirkwall, Inverness, Edinburgh and Glasgow, and also twice-
weekly summer ser-vices to Bergen (Norway).
Boat
Northlink Ferries ( 0845 600 0449; www.northlinkferries.co.uk ; ) runs daily
overnight car ferries between Aberdeen and Lerwick (passenger one-way £25 to £38, car
£101 to £136, 12 to 15 hours), stopping three to four times a week at Kirkwall, Orkney.
With a basic ticket you can sleep in recliner chairs or in the bar area. It's £31 for a berth in
a shared cabin and up to £129 for a comparatively luxurious double cabin. There's a cafe,
bar, restaurant and cinema on-board as well as slow wi-fi.
